Trapeze Wines

Trapeze Wines

Trapeze Wines project details

Trapeze is a 5 Star Halliday-rated Winery in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. Balancing precision, passion and experience, winemaker Brian Conway and viticulturist Malcolm Wiley craft highly respected wines that honour the unique terroir of their surrounds. Trapeze hold their branding in very high regard and as such have the highest standards for their wine labels. The collaboration with Claudia at Cloudy Co was key and set the tone.

Jamesprint have been able to compliment the design with exceptional print quality and outstanding service. Trapeze Wines clients can instantly recognize the brand on shelf and the visual representation of the wines matches the high-level quality of the wine inside.

We spoke to designer Claudia Passera at Cloudy Co about her work on the project.

How did Trapeze and Cloudy Co start collaborating together?

Cloudy Co had worked previously with winemakers Brian Conway and James Lance on an earlier release of the Trapeze brand. The business structure had since evolved and the brand needed to reflect the new direction.

What brief was given for the design?

Because of the rapport built through working together, the brief from Brian was deliberately open rather than prescriptive. We discussed the direction he envisioned for the brand – the ethos behind the winemaking, the practical realities of distribution and future portfolio expansion.

How did you start to come up with the design?

Strong design solutions often emerge from listening closely to the winemaker talk about what motivates them to do what they do. Early conversations with Brian about his commitment to making wines of balance became the conceptual anchor and starting point – paired with the brand name Trapeze.

What were the inspirations for the design?

The new identity and packaging uses stylised rings – a deliberate nod to the hoops used in aerial trapeze and acrobatic performance. They form the visual language of the brand and reference the winemaking approach.

What was the goal for the design?

We wanted to create a brand design that would be aesthetically distinctive and reflect the care and passion of the winemaking.

Which elements of the label are your favourite?

The pared back aesthetic.

Why do you think the design works for the branding?

As above – the pared back aesthetic sets it apart from other brands with its confidence and simplicity, reassuring customers that they are drinking a quality wine.

Jamesprint foiling is nothing short of exceptional. When holding delicate details that are barely visible to the naked eye (such as Tomich Sparkling M) or broad areas to overprint and sculpture emboss (such as Take it the Grave) Chris and his production team always impress.
